How many courts are at Roland-Garros?
Facts checked November 2, 2026 by the French Open Insider editorial team
Short answer
The stadium's own website lists 17: three show courts (Philippe-Chatrier, Suzanne-Lenglen and Simonne-Mathieu) and 14 outside courts. Other sources say 18 or 20. Court Philippe-Chatrier is the largest, with 15,000 seats, and the whole site covers 11.16 hectares (about 27.6 acres) between the Porte d'Auteuil and the Bois de Boulogne.
How many courts does Roland-Garros have?
It depends on the source. The stadium's website, stade.rolandgarros.com, lists three main courts plus "14 outside courts", 17 in all. A Paris 2024 Games venue page says 18 clay courts, and English Wikipedia says 20.
None of these sources says what it counts, for example whether practice courts are included. The site has also changed quickly: Court 14 opened in 2018, Court Simonne-Mathieu in 2019, and the old Court 1, nicknamed the bullring, was demolished in 2019. Older pages can carry older numbers.
The size of the grounds varies by source too. The stadium gives 11.16 hectares; older pages say 8.5, the size before the 2019 expansion. When the stadium opened in 1928 it had five courts on just over 3.25 hectares.
How many seats does each court have?
Court Simonne-Mathieu sits in the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil, with tropical greenhouses above its four stands. Which ticket gets you onto which court is explained in grounds pass vs stadium tickets.
| Court | Seats | Opened | Roof |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philippe-Chatrier | 15,000 (8,000 lower ring including 230 boxes, 7,000 upper ring) | 1928, renovated for 2020 | Retractable, since 2020 |
| Suzanne-Lenglen | More than 10,000 (1,700 lower ring, 8,300 upper ring) | 1994 | Retractable, since 2024 |
| Simonne-Mathieu | 5,000 (2,800 lower ring, 2,200 upper ring) | 2019 | None |
| Court 14 | 2,200, semi-sunken | 2018 | None |
| Other outside courts | Not listed court by court | Not listed | None |
What is the capacity of Court Philippe-Chatrier?
15,000 seats, by the stadium's figure; English Wikipedia gives 15,225. It is the main show court, where both singles finals were played in 2026.
That is large for a clay court but well short of the US Open's Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis stadium in the world, with about 23,000 seats. Seating on each court is covered in the tickets and seating guide.
What is the capacity of the whole stadium?
Roland-Garros does not publish a single capacity for the grounds. The four biggest courts add up to more than 32,200 seats, and grounds-pass holders on the outside courts come on top of that.
Attendance gives a better sense of scale. In 2026 the daily capacity during Opening Week was raised to 20,000, and the tournament reported a record of more than 727,000 visitors over its three weeks.
