    Zverev Clinches 2026 Year-End No. 1 Ranking

Alexander Zverev has clinched the 2026 ATP year-end No. 1 ranking. The ATP confirmed it on Monday, October 12, 2026, the day Carlos Alcaraz lost to Belgium's Zizou Bergs 7-5, 7-6 in the third round of the Shanghai Masters, a result that settled the race. Zverev is the first German man to finish a season at No. 1. The final rankings are published on November 23, after the ATP Finals, and he will begin his Roland-Garros 2027 title defense as both the defending champion and the year-end No. 1.

    How It Became Official

Zverev did not need to win a match that day. Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1 at the time, had not played since beating Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July. A right knee injury kept Sinner out of the US Open, Beijing and Shanghai, and on October 6 he announced that his 2026 season was over because of knee inflammation. Alcaraz's loss in Shanghai then closed the race with more than a month of the season left.

    A Breakthrough Season

    • Zverev won his first two Grand Slam titles in 2026: Roland-Garros in June and the US Open in September, where he beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the final.
    • He reached the Australian Open semifinals, losing a match of 5 hours and 27 minutes to the eventual champion Alcaraz, and the Wimbledon final, which he lost to Sinner.
    • According to the ATP, he finished the four majors of 2026 with a 25-2 record.
    • In September he clinched the Laver Cup for Team Europe in London, beating Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3.

    A Historic Milestone

Zverev is also the oldest player to finish a season at No. 1 for the first time. On November 23, 2026, the date of the year-end rankings, he will be 29 years and 217 days old: three days older than Andre Agassi in 1999 (29 years, 214 days) and 20 days older than Andy Murray in 2016 (29 years, 197 days), according to the ATP. His reaction: "It's been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York."

Update, November 2, 2026: Zverev has now also taken the No. 1 ranking itself. He secured it with a win over Tallon Griekspoor in Vienna on October 29 and is No. 1 in the rankings of November 2, the 30th man to reach No. 1 since 1973 (AFP).

Why It Matters for Roland-Garros 2027

Zverev will start Roland-Garros 2027 (main draw May 23 to June 6) as the player everyone is chasing. Sinner's knee is the biggest open question in the men's draw: he reached the Roland-Garros final in 2025, lost in the second round in 2026, and has not played since July.
