Alcaraz Wins Vienna on a Wildcard, Eyes Roland-Garros 2027
Carlos Alcaraz took a wildcard into the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, his first appearance there since 2021, and won the title by beating Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 on November 1, 2026. Here is where his comeback from a right wrist injury stands and what it means for Roland-Garros 2027.

Carlos Alcaraz won the 2026 Erste Bank Open in Vienna, beating Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 in the final on Sunday, November 1. He played the ATP 500 event on a wildcard, accepted on October 15, after the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia was postponed. It was his first appearance in Vienna since 2021 and his second title since a right wrist injury cost him Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2026.
A Lost Clay Season
Alcaraz's 2026 season started with the Australian Open title: he beat Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the final on February 1 and, at 22 years and 272 days, became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam. In April he hurt his right wrist in a first-round win over Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona Open, then withdrew from Barcelona and Madrid. The diagnosis was tenosynovitis, an inflammation of the wrist's tendon sheath. On April 24 he announced he would miss Rome and Roland-Garros, ending his bid for a third straight title in Paris after his wins in 2024 and 2025. On May 19 he also pulled out of Queen's and Wimbledon.
The Long Road Back
- He returned at the US Open after 139 days out, beating Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on August 31. As defending champion he reached the quarterfinals, where Ben Shelton beat him 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in a match that finished after 3:30 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history.
- On October 6 he won the Japan Open in Tokyo for the second year in a row, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4. It was his first title since the injury and his third of 2026, after the Australian Open and Doha.
- On October 12 he lost to Zizou Bergs 7-5, 7-6 in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. He arrived in Vienna ranked No. 3 with a 33-5 record for the season.
Why Vienna, and Why It Matters for Roland-Garros 2027
Alcaraz first played Vienna as an 18-year-old in 2021, beating Andy Murray and reaching the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion, Alexander Zverev. Zverev won the 2026 Roland-Garros title that Alcaraz missed and is world No. 1 in the rankings of November 2, 2026. See our report on Zverev's year-end No. 1 finish for more on the player Alcaraz would need to beat to win in Paris again.
A healthy wrist through the winter matters more for 2027 than any result in October. Alcaraz has made no statement about Roland-Garros 2027 yet, and the 2027 entry list is not published. Track the men's field in our 2027 player entry list and early Roland-Garros 2027 odds.
